The Ministry of Education and the Organisation of American States today signed an agreement that inject US$83,000 into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
This funding is being provided through the Development Cooperation Fund (DCF). The formal signing for the DCF was done today in the boardroom of the Ministry of Education’s 26 Brickdam Office. Chairing the brief signing ceremony was the Chief Education Officer, Mr. Marcel Hutson. He said that the funding being provided by the OAS will go towards training and occupation specifically. Representing the OAS was country representative, Mr. Jeon Ricot Dormeus. He said that the OAS has an important pillar which is sustainable development.
He said that the OAS has an important scholarship programme of which Guyana has been a beneficiary. Further, he said that the funding will help to support the impact of TVET in the Secondary and Post-Secondary education sector.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Hon. Nicolette Henry thanked the OAS for its continued support it has been offering to the government of Guyana. She said that investments in education is important since it is key for that transformative shift towards sustainable development.
She said that Guyana has been fortunate to have the support of international agencies and bilateral organisations such as the OAS. Minister Henry said that the funding will in a meaningful way, impact the youth population in Guyana. Further, Minister Henry said that much emphasis is usually placed on the traditional education sectors but it is becoming even more important now for a focus to be placed on TVET areas. She said that the funding will serve as an impetus towards moving TVET, the Ministry of Education and Guyana forward.
