The Linden Technical Institute will always open its doors to impart to students, both youths and adults, technical and vocational education and training programmes to make them competent and to satisfy the needs of industries and nation as a whole.

To provide training for individuals in the Engineering and Business fields at the Craft, Advanced and Technical Certificates levels, as well as Diploma levels for Business courses.

We will provide quality training in relevant technical and vocational areas with the focus of being the best institution in the Caribbean.

Development Through Training

What is now called the Linden Technical Institute was first established to provide training for the apprentices of the Demerara Bauxite Company. Training at the Institute commenced in 1958 and since then the Institute has gone through a number of managerial and operational changes. Some of these changes have been responses to the changing fortunes of the bauxite company, and have seen the Institution undergo a number of name changes.

In the 1960’s and 1970’s its name was Demba Trade School (D.T.C). In the late 1970’s its name changed to Guymine Technical Training Complex (GTTC) and this name was carried until 1990. From Guymine Technical Training Complex its name changed to LINMINE Technical Training Complex (LTTC) 1990-1993. When it came under the umbrella of the Bauxite Industry Development Company (BIDCO) it was then called the BIDCO Technical Training Complex (BTTC). In 1996 the Institution was transferred to the Ministry of Education and became known as the Linden Technical Institute (L.T.I).

Training of apprentices was formerly done on a highly selective basic with the objective of preparing small numbers of trainees for work within the industry. The first two (2) years of training were done within the Institute whilst the final three (3) years were spent gaining practical experience in various departments in the plant. Today, however, training is restricted to a two (2) year classroom stint for most of the courses with students receiving actual work experience whilst on vacation attachments.
On 1st August, 2005 the Institute was designated a Board-run learning Institution in accordance with the President’s College Act 1990

The Institute can be credited for providing training opportunities to over five thousand students from the period 1995 to present. Special courses of short and medium duration were also conducted for Agencies. These accounted for another four hundred and eighty six (486) trainees for the world of work

Special Courses
The Institute offers short courses on requests from Public and Private Organisations. Such training has been conducted for Ministry of Labour, IDB, CIDA, SIMAP, LEAP and BOSAI Minerals. These courses are funded by the particular organizations and the students are accredited by the Institute.

Student Services

  1. There are several classrooms available to all students for private study. These rooms are made available as determined by the Institute’s administration.
  2. The Library is opened from 08:00 hours to 16:30 hours, Mondays –Fridays. Texts are available to students. Journals, Periodicals and Magazines are also available.
  3. Internet and computer access are available.
  4. Photocopying and printing services are also offered.
  5. Cafeteria is available for meals and refreshments
  6. Guidance and Counseling services also available

Entry Requirements
Applicants must be at least sixteen (15) years and older to attend day courses and eighteen (18) years and older to attend Evening courses.
For Craft Courses, applicants must have successfully completed the Secondary Competency Certificate Programme Part 1; or have a sound foundation in general education up to the fifth form.
For all other courses applicants must possess at least four (4) subjects CSEC relevant to the programme.

Technician Certificate Courses
Maths, English A, Physics and any technical subject. Applicants with work experience, and person who have gained at least a credit in a comparable Craft Course may be considered eligible for entry.

Diploma Courses:
Math, English A, and any two business related subjects.
Applicants applying for evening programmes must have a minimum two years relevant working experience.

Guyana Technical Education Examination
This examination is the culmination of all training offered at the Institute. Exam fees are payable after the submission of the examination forms. Successful students are accredited with a Certificate or a Diploma.

Competency Based Education Training (CBET)
CBET is a modern strategy used for the delivery of training internationally. It provides for students/trainees to:

  • know what they have to learn in advance;
  • Know how they will be assessed;
  • Be the focus of the learning experiences;;
  • Appreciate that both theoretical knowledge and practical skills are valued;
  • Progress at their own pace;
  • Recognize learning as an individual experience
  • Know how well they are doing at all times.

Promotional Conditions
Students will be required to satisfy the following conditions before they are considered for promotion.

  • At least a minimum of eighty percent (80%) of the possible attendance for each subject .
  • Seventy percent (70%) of the total examination marks for gained each subject
  • Twenty percent (20%) of the total class work grades and ten percent (10%)of Homework for each individual subject.
  • Along with the above a minimum of forty-five percent (45%) grade on the overall assessment.

Work Attachment
Work attachment is an integral part of the Institute’s curricula and as such, all second year full-time students will be required to complete a six week period of work attachment in Industry/Commerce as a requirement to be awarded a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).

Registration Fees
All students will be required to pay an annual registration fee for contingency purposes and Students’ Guild membership. This fee is payable at the time of enrollment.

Student Activities
Students are involved in games and competitive sports on Friday afternoons and Bible Club activities once weekly.
The Students’ Guild is responsible for the entire affairs of the student body and makes suggestions/recommendations to administration on miscellaneous issues.
